At my psychiatrist/therapist’s office, we have to sign some insurance billing thing. Normally, the upper right corner says, “Dx #1: 296.34,” which is the billing code for severe depression with psychotic features.
Today I noticed that something was added, “Dx #2: 296.52.” That’s “bipolar 1 disorder, most recent episode depressed, moderate.”
I have a few issues with this. Ultimately I understand that diagnoses are mostly for insurance and billing. However …
1) why is that psychiatrists never actually tell you your diagnosis. At least mine doesn’t; he’ll say something like “you do meet some of the criteria of bipolar, borderline, PTSD, ednos… Pick your fucking disorder. They’re always shady about diagnosing
2) I’ve also always been bipolar 2. When the fuck did I get upgraded to bipolar 1. And more importantly, how/when/why did that happen?? Again, how come I’m not part of that discussion??
3) severe depression and moderate depression …. are two different things.
4) the only disorder every therapist, psychiatrist, or social worker have ever agreed on was Borderline Personality Disorder. Yet, I don’t see that billing code. I know that personality disorders aren’t billable to insurance companies and that’s part of the reason they aren’t diagnosed. HOWEVER, I would like to see some consistency among my healthcare workers.
That’s all. I’m done ranting.
